E. Thor Carlson:
Mad About Color:
Tapestries, Needlepoint, and Other Fiber Techniques

Exhibition on display from June 28 to July 30, 2009.

E. [Edward] Thor Carlson was born in Gardner, Massachusetts in 1925. He attended the Art School of the Worcester Art Museum until his studies were interrupted by WWII and a hitch in the Navy as a Sea Bee in the South Pacific.

While overseas, Carlson took his entrance exams for Yale's School of Fine Arts and began his studies there in 1946. Before graduation, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for a year at the Academia in Florence to study fresco painting. Returning to Yale, he studied with Josef Albers and Willem DeKooning. Upon graduation in 1951 with a BFA in painting, he went to New York City, working first at the advertising firm of McCann-Erickson and, later, as a free-lance mural painter. In 1957, Carlson returned to Massachusetts to teach art, in addition to creating it.

Over the years, Carlson has taught at the Worcester Art Museum, Fitchburg Art Museum, Athol Public Schools, and Petersham Craft Center. He founded the art departments of Mt. Wachusett Community College and Massasoit Community College. He was an Artist in Residence at the Applewild School in Fitchburg. His last full-time position was as the instructor for the commercial art program at Montachusett Regional Technical School in Fitchburg.

Carlson taught a variety of popular classes at the Petersham Craft Center n the 1960s including free form pottery and oil painting.

In 1986, Carlson moved New Hampshire where he continues on with a wide variety of projects and work. Along with his love for textiles, Carlson paints, draws, works in sculpture, and murals. Tapestry weaving his occupied much of the artist's work during the past thirty- four years. His grandmother taught him Scandinavian methods for tapestry.

His works are in many public and private collections in the USA, Europe, and North Africa.
